New York and New Jersey to the Indian River: I-95 without the South Florida traffic
From the tri-state area, this is the last calm exit on I-95 before Florida gets crowded. Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale are another two and a half hours of six-lane traffic south; Grant-Valkaria is Exit 156, a two-lane road along the water, and a dock.
I-95 the whole way — one road, one exit
Day 1 — the tri-state to the Carolinas
I-95 through Delaware, Baltimore and Richmond. Get past Washington before 6am or after 8pm. Aim for Santee, Florence or Walterboro, South Carolina — about 700 miles.
Day 2 — the Carolinas to Brevard
I-95 through Savannah and Jacksonville, then straight down the coast to Exit 156 (Micco/Barefoot Bay) and five minutes east to the river. About 400 miles, 6 hours.
Where to break the trip
- Santee, SCThe classic snowbird stop. Cheap, easy on and off I-95.
- Florence, SCSlightly further north, more hotel choice.
- Richmond, VAIf you leave New York late in the day, stop here and make it three days.
Three airports, and the one you probably want
75 minutes away. Dozens of daily nonstops from JFK, LGA, EWR and ISP.
35 minutes. Check it first — the drive from the gate to the dock is half an hour.
2 hours south, often the cheapest tri-state fare.
Full drive times and pickup notes are on the airports and getting here page.
What New York & New Jersey guests tell us afterwards
- One interstate, one exit. No cutting across the peninsula, no Turnpike tolls through Miami.
- You stop before the traffic. Winter population south of Stuart is a different experience entirely.
- The lagoon is an estuary, not a beachfront strip — dolphins and manatees at the dock, not jet skis.
- Vero Beach is 25 minutes south for restaurants and shopping; Melbourne is 25 minutes north for the hospital, Costco and the airport.

How far is the beach from the house?
Twelve minutes by car to the nearest Atlantic beach crossover, and 5.4 miles by boat to the Sebastian Inlet sandbar. The house itself is on the Indian River Lagoon, which is the calm side.
Is this area quieter than Palm Beach or Vero?
Considerably. Grant-Valkaria is unincorporated south Brevard — no high-rises, no strip. Vero and Melbourne are both about 25 minutes away when you want a city.
Do you take long-stay bookings direct?
