Michigan to the Indian River: the drive, the flights and the winter rate

Almost every Michigan snowbird we host takes the same road: I-75 out of the cold, all the way down. The difference is where you get off it. Most of Michigan keeps driving to Naples or Fort Myers on the Gulf side. Getting off on the Atlantic side, at the south end of the Indian River Lagoon, saves you three hours of driving and puts you on protected water instead of open surf.

The drive

I-75 south, then across central Florida to I-95

Day 1 — Detroit to south Georgia

I-75 straight through Toledo, Cincinnati, Lexington, Knoxville, Chattanooga and Atlanta. Aim for Macon, Cordele or Tifton, Georgia — roughly 800 miles, 12 hours. Time Atlanta for mid-morning or after 7pm.

Day 2 — south Georgia to the river

I-75 to Wildwood, Florida Turnpike east to Orlando, SR 528 (Beachline) east, then I-95 south to Exit 156 (Micco/Barefoot Bay). About 450 miles, 6.5 hours, and the last 10 minutes are on US-1 along the water.

Where to break the trip

  • Macon, GAHalfway if you leave Detroit early. Cheap chain hotels off Exit 169.
  • Cordele or Tifton, GABetter if you want a short second day — you arrive here by lunch.
  • Chattanooga, TNSplit the trip in three if you're towing a boat or driving an RV.
Or fly

Three airports, and the one you probably want

MCO
Orlando International

75 minutes away. The most nonstops from DTW and GRR, all winter.

MLB
Melbourne Orlando International

35 minutes away. Small, easy, limited nonstops — worth checking first.

PBI
Palm Beach International

About 2 hours south. Sometimes cheaper in February and March.

Full drive times and pickup notes are on the airports and getting here page.

Why this end of the lagoon

What Michigan guests tell us afterwards

  • You keep I-75 for 90% of the trip, then cut across — no Atlanta-to-Tampa crawl and no Alligator Alley.
  • The lagoon is protected water. If you tow a boat down from the Great Lakes, you can fish in a chop that would keep you off the Gulf.
  • Barefoot Bay's pickleball, golf and pool are three miles south, and the community is heavily Midwestern — you'll hear Michigan accents at the courts.
  • You're 25 minutes from a real hospital system (Health First Palm Bay and Melbourne), which matters on a five-month stay.

The dock was perfect, had a lot of space, and we even fished a couple of times and caught some fish.
