Reading the surf
If the North Jetty view shows clean lines stacking outside the rocks, First Peak is working. Whitewater churning right against the catwalk with no shape usually means it's blown out — check the West Shot for lagoon wind direction before you commit.
Reading the wind
West Shot looks back over the Indian River. Glassy lagoon = light wind, a great morning to paddle or run the sandbar. Chop with visible whitecaps means 12+ knots and a wet ride across to the spoil islands.
Reading the current
The Jetty Wide View shows the inlet mouth. A hard rip with standing waves at the mouth is an outgoing tide against an east swell — the worst time to run a small boat out. Wait for the slack around the tide change.
Reading the crowd
Cars stacked on the north side and anglers shoulder-to-shoulder on the catwalk usually means the park's north lot is near capacity. Go early (before 9am) or make it an afternoon trip.
