What is the Sebastian Inlet Sandbar?
The Sebastian Inlet Sandbar is a wide, shallow sand island that forms on the lagoon side of the Sebastian Inlet. On weekends the water fills with anchored boats, kids playing in ankle-deep water, and dogs off leash. It's Florida's version of a lakeside beach party — except it's saltwater and you got there by boat. Depending on the tide, it's a football-field-wide island of dry sand or a submerged ankle-deep flat you can wade across.
Where exactly is it?
Just inside Sebastian Inlet on the north side of the channel, roughly 27.858°N / 80.451°W. From our dock in Grant-Valkaria it's about 5 miles by boat — a 15-minute run at cruising speed. You'll see the anchored boats before you see the sand.
From the property to the sandbar
Follow the channel south from our dock (green markers on the right heading south — the standard "red-right-returning" flips when you're going seaward). At marker G "5" turn east through the shallow flat, keeping the sandbar visible on your bow. Approach from the west with less than a 2-ft draft.
When to go — the tide is everything
The sandbar is a completely different animal at different tide stages:

Best: weekend, low tide, 10am–3pm. Check tide charts at NOAA (station 8722588, Sebastian Inlet) before you leave the dock.
How to anchor safely
The sandbar bottom is firm sand with scattered rocks — a Danforth or Fortress anchor sets well. Rules of thumb:
- · Scope of 5:1 minimum. 5 ft of anchor line for every 1 ft of water depth.
- · Anchor pointing INTO the current, not the wind. The tide reverses; the boat swings.
- · Set the anchor by backing down slowly. A dragging anchor at low tide is embarrassing; at high tide it's dangerous.
- · Never anchor in the channel. The Sebastian Inlet channel is deep and fast — a wake from a passing boat can spin you 90°.
What to bring
- · Anchor with plenty of line (100 ft minimum)
- · Floating cooler (Yeti Roadie floats when packed light)
- · Sun shirts and reef-safe sunscreen
- · Water shoes — oyster shells will slice a bare foot
- · Dry bag for phones and keys
- · A small shovel — kids will dig for hours
Getting there without a boat
You can beach-walk toward the sandbar from Sebastian Inlet State Park's north-side beach, but the crossing gets deep and the current is real. Two better options:
1. Rent a pontoon from Whiskey Creek Boat Rentals at Capt. Hiram's (~$450/day for 24-ft). No boater ed card needed — they issue a temporary certificate. 2. Book a captain — Fin & Fly does half-day sandbar trips for $450 for 4 people, includes cooler.
Fishing from the sandbar
Yes, seriously. On outgoing tides, trout and jack push bait onto the flat's edge. A small popping cork with a live shrimp on the sandbar edge produces reliably. Snook stack up under the docks lining the inlet — sight-fish them with a soft plastic.
Etiquette
- · Volume down after 5pm. Families and fishermen share the water.
- · Take EVERYTHING out. Beer cans, kids' shovels, cigarette butts — bring a trash bag.
- · Give the wildlife space. Manatees pass through; keep a 50-ft distance and cut engines when you see one.
- · Sound signals matter. One short blast = passing on your starboard side.

Can I get to the sandbar by kayak from your dock?
Yes but it's a haul — 5 miles each way. Doable for experienced paddlers on a slack tide. Most guests trailer or launch a small boat from Christenson's Landing (3 min from us).
Are dogs allowed on the sandbar?
There's no official rule — practically speaking, dogs are welcomed and common. Bring water, keep them out of the channel, and clean up.
What about jet skis on the sandbar?
Jet skis anchor along the edges. Idle speed within 100 ft of the anchored fleet is enforced by FWC — they patrol on summer weekends.
