The Indian River Lagoon is North America's most biodiverse estuary — 4,300 species and counting. Below: where and when to see them, from cold-weather manatee refuges to the country's oldest wildlife sanctuary.
Cold-weather manatee refuge. When Atlantic water drops below 68°F (Dec–Feb), 20–50 manatees pack into the warmer intracoastal water here. Observation deck, kayak launch, boardwalk over the mangroves.
Local tip · Best viewing is 8–10am after a cold night. Rent a kayak from the on-site vendor and paddle silently among them — never touch or chase.
Established 1903 by Theodore Roosevelt — the very first US National Wildlife Refuge, protecting the pelican colony on Pelican Island in the Indian River Lagoon. Boardwalk, observation tower, kayak launch. The island itself is only viewable by boat.
Local tip · Charter a guided kayak ecotour ($55/person) to circle the island. Roseate spoonbills, ibis, ospreys, and reddish egrets nest here.
Visit website →One of the most important loggerhead nesting beaches in the western hemisphere — 25% of all US loggerhead nests happen inside this 20-mile stretch. Green and leatherback turtles nest here too. Ranger-led night turtle walks in June/July book out 3 months in advance.
Local tip · Never use white flashlights or phone screens on the beach after dark May–Oct. Red-light only. Fill holes, take trash. Nesting mothers imprint on red — they'll come ashore in front of you.
Visit website →Resident bottlenose dolphins work the lagoon every day. We see them from our dock 4–5 mornings a week — pods of 3 to 8, sometimes with calves in summer. They chase mullet through the shallows at dawn.
Local tip · First hour after sunrise is prime. Sit still on the dock with coffee — motion scares them out of range.
140,000 acres wrapping Kennedy Space Center. Black Point Wildlife Drive (7-mile loop) is one of the best bird-watching drives in Florida — herons, egrets, roseate spoonbills, wood storks, alligators, and manatees in the boat basins. Bring binoculars.
Local tip · Drive Black Point at sunrise or the last two hours of daylight. Winter (Nov–Mar) doubles the bird count.
1.3-mile elevated boardwalk through cypress swamp and along Turkey Creek. Manatees Nov–Mar, alligators year-round, gopher tortoises, otters, 100+ bird species. Nature center on-site.
Local tip · The Sand Pine Scrub Loop adds another mile through the last stand of native Florida scrub — a habitat that's 99% gone statewide.
Guided kayak paddle through the mangrove tunnels north of the sandbar. Manatees, dolphins, spotted eagle rays, roseate spoonbills. Beginner-friendly — the guides carry a chase pontoon.
Local tip · The 4pm tour hits golden hour and cooler water — half the bugs, twice the wildlife.
Cypress lake with the densest osprey nesting in North America. Also home to alligators, bald eagles, and a small manatee population that swims 15 miles up the C-54 canal.
Local tip · May–June for baby ospreys in the nest. The 8am pontoon tour is the calmest water and best photos.
